Nashville is growing by almost 100 people a day. That growth has created new traffic challenges for those who live in and commute to to the region. In October, Mayor Megan Barry proposed a bold new plan to address Nashville's public transit system with improved and expanded bus and rapid bus service, neighborhood transit centers, light rail, and accessibility and safety improvements. The plan is a $5.2 billion investment in Nashville's future.
The Transit for Nashville coalition is a growing group of companies and organizations, that recognizes the need for our region to invest in a transportation system that relieves traffic congestion, connects our neighborhoods, and increases access for all Nashvillians. While many of the specifics of the plan still need community input, the plan needs an avenue for funding. The Transit for Nashville coalition has assembled to build support and put the funding issue on the May 2018 ballot.
A high percentage of tech industry workers that live in cities with public transit are accustomed to not owning a vehicle. Nashville's public transit system challenges are a real barrier for hiring tech workers from cities with established systems. Additionally, there are concerns about spending resources on fixed transit systems when tech advances like autonomous vehicles are around the corner.
This event will provide a discussion, moderated by Dan Hogan, Executive Chairman at Medalogix, with industry and policy leaders on our region's transit challenges, what's currently happening with the state of transportation technology, and how the transit proposal will address the challenges.
