Description
Nobel Prize-winning chemical engineer Frances Arnold will deliver “Innovation by Evolution: Bringing New Chemistry to Life.” She is the fall 2020 speaker for the John R. and Donna S. Hall Engineering Lecture at Vanderbilt School of Engineering. Arnold will appear live online. She has used directed evolution to address problems in alternative energy, chemicals and medicine. Arnold pioneered directed enzyme evolution, for which she received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2018. She is the first woman to be elected to all three of the National Academies—Engineering, Medicine, and Sciences. The Linus Pauling Professor of Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering and Biochemistry at the California Institute of Technology, Arnold currently holds more than 60 U.S. patents and has co-founded three companies in sustainable chemistry and renewable energy.
